School youth leadership in action

Unique Covid Response

At our meeting in May 2020 we discussed ways to support children and young people in the Hawkes Bay while in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic. After a lot of brainstorming we decided one easy way was to offer the youth leadership group in each public high school a one-off grant of $2000 to use in a way that they believed would support the young people at their school. We were happy to accept the decision of the youth leadership group under the guise that they were more in tune with the needs of young people. As a general rule we do not fund schools (leaving this to the Ministry of Education), but the circumstances that unfolded in 2020 were unique.

Below are photos of some youth leadership groups who took responsibility to ensure that the funding was allocated in a way that would best meet the needs of the young people in their school communities.
